Advert Reconstruction

Last week or so; I helped some of my friends who were doing some work for their masters; at Sunderland University, with a small video project this was to recreate a television advert.

The help I gave was as a Spark, I lent a hand where I was able with the lighting and even participated as a extra.

Little notebook (whip out at a moment's notice) write how everyone liked their tea or coffee, it saves so much time and makes you look so much more professional not asking every time... Also, if you have time you can write a little description next to each person so you can actually remember their name too!! (I found just writing the department at the top of a list helped)

A little thought of mine on Photography and Cinematography

For me in regards to photography and film , it’s about  telling and creating a story, via the camera lens focusing on the subject, to create through light an imagery something great.

However it is the subject that is the focus, and there’s nothing more pleasing that to have an interesting subject,  like someone who is alternative and unique.

Try Life

From Monday 26th September-11th of October 2011; I finished working on a  Interactive Drama series called Try Life, produced by Kestrel Film Works.

The aim of Try Life is to create an interactive cinematic experience, in an effort to revolutionise the way young people assimilate social responsibilities.

My role on the production was as a Spark, a lighting assistant.

I enjoyed my work on Try Life and learned a huge amount on the aspects of lighting, the many varied and various pieces of lighting equipment and terminology as well as the workings and dynamics of a professional production.

Steampunk Photoshoot (Tori T)

On Monday, 19 September 2011 my friend Tori asked for some volunteers for a steam punk photo shoot, myself and friends Grayham and Jade volunteered.

For those who don’t know Steampunk is a sub-genre of science fiction, fantasy, alternate history, and speculative fiction.

Steampunk involves a setting where steam power is still widely used—usually Victorian era Britain—that incorporates elements of either science fiction or fantasy. Works of steampunk often feature anachronistic technology or futuristic innovations as Victorians may have envisioned them, based on a Victorian perspective on fashion, culture, architectural style, art, etc. This technology may include such fictional machines as those found in the works of H. G. Wells and Jules Verne.

Other examples of steampunk contain alternative history-style presentations of such technology as lighter-than-air airships, analog computers, or such digital mechanical computers as Charles Babbage and Ada Lovelace’s Analytical engine.

Various modern utilitarian objects have been modded by individual artisans into a pseudo-Victorian mechanical “steampunk” style, and a number of visual and musical artists have been described as steampunk.

Anyway back to what I was talking about, the three of us who volunteered to model for our friend Tori, each two or three costumes. Costumes usually take a bit of time to put together as well as some expense on occasion, but once put together everything falls into place.
I am rather pleased and a little proud of my costumes I have to say, I think I did all right as a model but I would have to say, to really tell how good it was is  really in the finished product.

Tori’s photographs of steam punk and alternative fashion are really good, she hopes to set up our own photography and film business, I hope all goes well.

UWA: Urban Wrestling Alliance (Promo)

On Saturday, 17 September 2011; I was contacted by my friend Tori Turner as she needed help to film some amateur wrestling in South Shields at a community centre.
Naturally thinking it would be good experience I took her up on her offer.
We sorted some stuff out and went through a few things about what we were going to do, then we began by filming little bits and pieces of people setting up the wrestling ring.
Shortly sometime after Tori had to leave out she had to take a tripod and camera back to Newcastle.
However when she was soon to return to South Shields where I was her car broke down and so she was unable to get back to where I was.
This is a terrible shame and quite unfortunate, it would’ve been nice if she was able to get back and help me to film the wrestling.
So as it turned out I had to do all of the filming myself, I think I got some good footage which I check once I got home.
The way the cameras were set up, whereas follows: we had a Sony handicap and on a tripod sitting on top of a sturdy table to get a decent height advantage and a good overview of the wrestling going on within the ring.
There was also a second camera of which I cannot remember them make but it was quite a small thing, this was used for handheld shots around the ring itself.
I believe some decent and quite good footage was recorded of the young amateur wrestler’s going at it and pulling off various moves.
From what I hear though unfortunately the promo video fell through, I however do not know what the reasons were for this.

The Best View

On one weekend I help work on a short film for the Northumbria University initiate scheme; in conjunction with Tyneside Cinema.

The film is called “The Best View” and it is a black and white silent movie with some twists.

It was filmed in Jesmond Dene, which is a rather picturesque place and a rather pleasant location in my opinion and I would certainly film their again.

My role on the film was as the clapper loader; the director was a guy named Martin and the actors were called Alex or Alexandra Ferrie as she is known and David whose last name I am unsure of.

The Turing Test

The Turing test was the first proper feature short film I had worked on; It was my first experience as a Runner.

I started work at 13:30 and finished at 03:00 in the morning, such is the way of things in the media industry on projects.

My work on this short film project is unpaid and as they say you have to start some where and that is at the bottom.

I spent most of my time making Tea and Coffee, this was also something new I learned on the day to lol as I admit, I did not know how to make tea or coffee.

I also fetched and carried things that where needed, lent a hand in sticking up some gels, sat in a van to look after equipment it contained and did some tidying up.

Furthermore I’ve found that my brother is no longer a runner and is Best Boy.

He is assisting and helping the GAFA, the man who was head of lighting.

I however learned some new media film based terminology I did not know such as turning; which is the same as rolling or action.

Also we were using a proper film camera that was not digital and used proper film, I have not come across this before and would like to learn and find out more.

I continue my Runner work tomorrow and on Saturday.

Tomorrow according to my call sheet I’m at The Civic Center in Newcastle, I shall be working in the Civic Centers Print Room.

I need to be on set for 16:00 and the estimated Wrap which is the finish time is 01:00.

Also tomorrow I hear there will be extras and I found that my old outdoor utility vest has come in real handy as it has loads of pockets.
Another day of filming over, one more day to go tomorrow, I’m back at the Civic Centre again but this time I shall be working in the Call Centre.

Today I think was a better day but in part mostly just like yesterday.

I’ve started by fetching and carrying things and taking them to where they needed to be such as a store room where some scenes were being filmed and clearing and emptying a corridor of equipment where we kept some equipment and also where we did some filming.

For the most part I spend most of my time making more tea’s and coffee, furthermore I begin with station nearby storeroom where they were filming but later moved to a staff cafeteria area.

The cafeteria area was in fact where I spent the majority of my time making various refreshments, applying people with cups of water for example and helping with food for the crew.

I have to say though the Civic Centre as a filming location is rather great, is quite an interesting building, as it has a rather intriguing interior, structure and layout.

What struck me though was the various ways in which some of the rooms were decorated that I went through, for example the place we used as our Green Room.

I have also found out more about the Short film the Turing Test itself, the director wrote a script idea are and shot a piece of test footage and presented it to Northern film and media for their shorted competition and won a small budget to make this film.

The whole film and everything along with it that entails the film making process, should be finished by September, and also it may be entered into various film festivals.

Tomorrow I have to be at the Civic Centre four 12:30 and the estimated that time will be 00:30, although another interesting facets about tomorrow years we shall have extras on hand and there shall be 20 or more from what I hear, so tomorrow should be long and tiring but interesting.

The other day was the last day of filming that took place for this project at the Civic Center in its call center.

It was quite good, I had a couple of conversations with the Loader, Assistant Camera Operator and  Producer as well as the DOP (Director of Photography).

Once again as a runner I made plenty of tea and coffee, I was also given the task of guarding a door which had to remain open because for security reasons and somebody had to keep eye on it, otherwise wouldn’t have been able to use our filming location.

We for this film also had extras and I had to look after the extras for a time; They also even made me an extra for a time because we did not have enough for the film.

As usual I helped with the preparation of food and I helped keep an eye on our lead actress to see when she was ready.

Student Awards

My Showreel from back when I was in university got  nominated for best show reel, at a student awards event; I entered something called The Book Trailer Competition at University. It has been quite a surprise, also my good friend Shandor had been nominated for best Animation :)

Well my Sparky’s nomination for best show reel at the student award’s, did not win but I have to say it was great to just be nominated.

Shame my  friend Shandor’s animation nomination did not win either, but it was great to see a bit of it on the big screen. :)

Bed and Breakfast

Friday 17th June 2011 I was in Whitley Bay at The Rex Hotel, helping on a film project directed by a friend of mine called Chris Andrew.

My job on the project was as a Dolly and Grip Operator, I also did a little Clapperboard work and a brief bit of work with a light.

The Track and Dolly shot; which included the use of a Jib, was a bit tricky for the DOP Steven Sinclair, mostly impart due to the clambering about he had to do, but from the look of one of the shots of  a sequence, I think he and I pulled of what we were trying to achieve.

There was an actress playing the part of a prostitute, on top of the lead male actor on a bed; what we were doing was to bring the camera toward and over then end of the bed, moving upwards and along it till we got to see the female actress's lower back, which had a rather nice fake tattoo which said Delicious, which we lingered on with the camera for a moment, before she got off the male actor, for this being my first sex scene I think I went rather well.

Quite Please

“Quite Please” Entry for the 2010 Virgin Media Shorts competition, the film was about the comedic relationship, between two office workers.

Cascade Effect Trailer

A mock up film trailer my Brother Callum made in his first year at Northumbira University.

I put it up on hear as I happen to be in it, I very briefly appear right at the end as the hooded guy with the orange balaclava swinging a baseball bat.
